12. Why Meaning Matters in our Life (And How to Find More of It)

In this episode, I explore two important questions we can ask ourselves (these will shake up your brain cells!):

1) Do I feel my life has meaning?

2) Would I like to have more meaning in my life?

After attending a powerful event led by Arthur Brooks and reflecting on the teachings of Viktor Frankl and other thought leaders, I share why meaning is not just a “nice to have”, it is essential.

We’ll talk about:

  • What meaning is and why it's essential to a vibrant life
  • Why a lack of meaning may be at the root of so much unhappiness and loneliness today
  • The five places we most often find meaning (get ready to take notes!)

Because the truth is, meaning isn’t something we wait for. It’s something we build and sometimes re-build. If you’ve been feeling a little disconnected, restless or unsure of your “why,” this episode is for you.

Here are links to the books I mentioned:

1) The Meaning of your Life by Arthur Brooks

2) Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

3) The Blue Zones by Dan Buettner

Onward and upward. xo

Kathleen DuBois

Kathleen DuBois believes life is meant to be lived with joy, purpose, courage--and a whole lot of resilience and grit.

A business leader, author, leadership coach, avid hiker and lifelong learner, Kathleen has spent her career helping people and organizations grow, thrive and make a difference in the world. But some of her greatest lessons haven't come from the boardroom. They've come from climbing mountains, navigating life's unexpected twists and turns, taking big leaps, starting over, deepening her faith--and learning that flourishing doesn't mean life is perfect.

As host of The Resilience & Grit Podcast, Kathleen explores the habits, experiences, relationships and choices that help us become stronger, happier and more fully alive. Through candid solo episodes and inspiring conversations with guests, she brings curiosity, optimism, humor and real-life experience to topics ranging from resilience and relationships to faith, personal growth, leadership, healing and happiness.

Kathleen is a Partner and national industry leader at Wipfli, where she leads the firm's Nonprofit, Government and Education practice. She is also a certified leadership coach and published author.

When she's not working or behind the microphone, you're likely to find Kathleen hiking a mountain trail, trying something new, spending time with people she loves, or looking for the next opportunity to grow.

Her philosophy? We don't get to choose everything that happens to us, but we do get to choose what we do next.
